Dr. Tracy Doyle, assistant professor of music, joined the United States Air Force Academy Band as principal flute on its ten-day national tour in March. The ensemble was scheduled to perform concerts throughout Indiana, Kentucky, Tennessee, and Mississippi, before returning to their home base in Colorado Springs.

Michele Trujillo, instructor of teacher education, recently presented at the Learning Disabilities Association Conference in Salt Lake City. She will present next month at the Council for Exceptional Children Conference in Seattle and in July at the International Conference for Special Education in Alicante Spain.

Work by Dr. Joyce Centofanti, associate professor of art, is being shown in three current exhibitions:
- Insight/Inside L.A. at the Jose Drudis-Biada Art Gallery, Mount St. Mary's College, Los Angeles. The exhibit is a visual history of Los Angeles art over the last thirty years seen through the prism of the artists who have shown in this gallery since its inception. It was coordinated with the annual College Art Association Conference, held this year in Los Angeles.
- Iron Tribe, an exhibit that has traveled to five universities throughout the United States
- Colorado Art Education Association Exhibit 2009, at the Tri Lakes Art Center, Palmer Lakes, CO

Three members of the Human Performance & Physical Education (HPPE) department attended the annual Rocky Mountain American College of Sports Medicine conference, held at the U.S. Olympic Training Center in Colorado Springs, Feb. 27-28. Students, faculty members, physicians and other interested individuals from throughout Colorado and Wyoming were in attendance. Dr. Tracey L. Robinson, associate professor in HPPE, and Ben Kern, MA, ASC strength & conditioning coach & adjunct instructor in HPPE, presented a research poster entitled "Effects of Beta-Alanine Supplementation on Performance and Body Composition in Collegiate Wrestlers and Football Players." This research was conducted last fall with members of the Adams State wrestling and football teams. The poster presentation generated a lot of interest and questions from conference attendees. Scotty Pressley, an undergraduate HPPE major, also attended the conference. He was awarded a trip to a conference of his choice in the field as part of a travel scholarship contest conducted by the HPPE department.

ASCPD Officer Alycia Riggs is mentoring kindergarteners at Polston School one day per week. Her work was noted with appreciation at the Alamosa Safe Schools meeting recently. She also works with the San Luis Valley Prevention coalition on alcohol education and prevention of underage drinking. ASCPD recently obtained three portable breath testing instruments for alcohol enforcement.

ASCPD Officer Tresa Rupright recently completed a three-day training in Canon City on emergency medical rescue techniques. The course trained first responders on rescuing officers or civilians from situations where EMS personnel would be unable to enter a dangerous area requiring an armed response. She also recently completed a self-published book on sexual assault on children. The book "Kendra the Brave" will be available at Lulu.com publishing.

ASCPD Chief Dr. Joel F. Shults will be the keynote speaker for the Colorado Law Enforcement Officer's annual award ceremony to be held on Police Officer Memorial Day in Denver in May. He was the guest speaker for the San Luis Valley Peace Officer Association's first meeting of 2009, reporting on his research on police officers as crime victims. In addition, Shults was awarded a full scholarship to attend the National Sexual Assault Response Team conference in Seattle. Last year he was awarded a scholarship to attend the International Association of Chiefs of Police Violence Against Women Institute. Shults works closely with the San Luis Valley Anti-Violence task force and the Sexual Assault Prevention task force and is serving as a team member for the group's domestic violence audit team, which is engaged in a system-wide study of services for domestic violence victims. Shults has published a book of daily inspirational readings for law enforcement entitled, "Is The Line Ready? A Policeman's Perspective on Worldly Wisdom," available through Lulu.com publishing. Shults also serves on the board of The San Luis Valley Training Foundation, which is sponsoring two major training events in the Valley that will be attended by ASCPD officers. In March, nationally known psychologist Dr. Kevin Gilmartin will conduct a two-day session, "Emotional Survival for Law Enforcement." In April, international expert C.B. Smith from Canada will conduct an interdisciplinary training on child abuse, shaken baby syndrome, and child homicide.

Officer Johnny Romero was appointed as a Special Investigator for the 12th Judicial District Attorney's office. Special investigators may be called upon to assist with major case investigations and special assignments to assist the DA Investigator when needed. The appointment is a continuation of ASCPD's integration with local law enforcement. ASCPD officers continue to be represented on the San Luis Valley Drug Task Force and the SLV Law Enforcement Training Foundation.
