Circulation FAQs
Who may get a library card?
- ASU Students
- ASU Faculty & Staff
- SLV Residents (16 years or older)
- Patrons from Colorado Library Card (CLC) libraries
- People who make special arrangements with us. Call (719) 587-7781 and ask to speak with the director.
How do I renew materials?
You may renew materials in any of the following ways:
- Online: Login to renew materials online. You will need to know your library card number which is the barcode located on your card that starts with the number 401.
- In Person: You may stop by the circulation desk on the first floor and ask that your materials be renewed. You do not need to have the items with you.
- Telephone: You may call the circulation desk at (719) 587-7781 and ask to renew your items.
- Email: You may send an e-mail to libcirculation@adams.edu. Be sure to include your name and the titles of the items you wish to have renewed.
How do I get a library card?
ASU Students: Bring your ASU student ID to the circulation desk at the library (located on the first floor). Upon completing an application form, we will place a barcode onto the back of your student ID. It will then function as your library card.

Community Patrons: In order to get a library card, a person must be at least 16 years old and a resident of the San Luis Valley. Present your driver's license (or other photo ID) at the circulation counter on the first floor of the library. (If you do not have a photo ID, please speak with us and we will make other arrangements.) Upon filling out an application form, we will issue you an ASU library card.

How many items may I check out?
ASU Students: You may check out as many items as you wish, except for videos which are restricted to two.
ASU Faculty & Staff: You may check out as many items as you wish. There is no limit.
Community Patrons: You may check out up to five items at a time, no more than two of which may be videos.

What items may I not check out?

What length of time may I check out items for?
ASU Students: You may check out materials for a three-week period, including videos. All materials are due back at the end of each semester regardless of the three-week time period. If you would like to keep materials checked out during the period between semesters, please come in and make special arrangements with us.
ASU Faculty & Staff: You may check out materials for an entire semester, including videos. All materials are due back at the end of each semester.
Community Patrons: You may check out materials for a three-week period, including videos.
 
May I renew library materials?
ASU Students: Yes, items may be renewed for as many as three additional three-week periods. Videos, however, may not be renewed. Materials may not be renewed past the end of a semester. If you would like to keep materials checked out during the period between semesters, please come in and make special arrangements with us.
ASU Faculty & Staff: No, faculty and staff may not renew materials. However, items may be checked out again as soon as they are checked in. We need for all items to be checked in once each semester for inventory purposes.
Community Patrons: Yes, items may be renewed for as many as three additional three-week periods. Videos, however, may not be renewed.
 
 
What if I return an item late?
ASC Students: After a grace period, you will be charged a $5 per item overdue fee. Until the overdue item is returned, you will be unable to check out further materials. Once the item is returned, your borrowing privileges will be restored. However, a hold will remain on your ASC account until the fine is paid. This may prevent you from registering for classes or obtaining a transcript. Payment should be made at the ASC One Stop in the Student Union Building. The receipt must then be brought to the library in order for your library account to be cleared.

What if I lose library materials?
You will be charged for the replacement of the items plus a processing fee. Lost materials must be paid for before checking out additional materials. Payment should be made at the ASC One Stop in the Student Union Building. The receipt must then be brought to the library in order for your library account to be cleared.
 
What if I lose my library card?
Give us a call at (719) 587-7781 and tell us your card is lost. We will disable your old number so no one else may check out books in your name, and we will issue you a new library card number.
 
What if my address or phone number changes?
Call the circulation desk at 587-7781 and give us your new address or phone number. Submitting an address change to Richardson Hall does not change your address at the Nielsen Library. You must contact us separately. You may also submit your changes electronically by clicking HERE.
