Adams State College was recently admitted as a regular member of the Council of Graduate Schools, according to Adams State Associate Provost for Graduate Studies Don Johnston. Based in Washington, D.C., the Council of Graduate Schools is the only national organization in the United States that is dedicated solely to the advancement of graduate education and research.

"Participating in the Council of Graduate Schools will be of great benefit as we build and improve our graduate program," Johnston said.

Adams State's Graduate School offers master's degree programs in Art, Business (MBA) Counselor Education, Teacher Education, History, Government & Philosophy; and Human Performance and Physical Education. Many programs have distance education options. The college recently revised its graduate admission requirements to better address the needs of adult students.

Adams State's Graduate School recorded a 5.7 percent enrollment increase for the spring 2009 semester, with a total of 479 students.

CGS connects members to the major issues of graduate education through a range of publications, research, and meetings. The organization focuses on important issues and offers recommendations and proven solutions to address these issues. CGS best practices initiatives include Ph.D. Completion; Professional Master's Degrees; Responsible Conduct of Research, and Entrepreneurship.

Adams State joins more than 500 CGS member universities in the United States and Canada, and 14 universities outside North America. Collectively, CGS institutions annually award more than 94 percent of all U.S. doctorates and over 80 percent of all U.S. master's degrees.
