ASCPD investigating blow gun assault (04-14-09)

Adams State College Police are investigating an assault that occurred about 9:30 p.m. Wednesday near the Student Union Building computer lab on Stadium Dr.

According to ASCPD Chief Joel Shults, a student was struck with a four inch dart of the kind likely propelled from a blow gun. The victim was immediately assisted by fellow students and transported by ambulance to San Luis Valley Regional Medical Center. The student was treated and released. The identity of the student is not being released.

The dart was recovered and taken as evidence. A vehicle which may be associated with the incident is described as a dark colored, medium sized four-door sedan. No other similar attacks were reported in the city and no motive for the attack is known, Shults said. The campus community was notified of the incident and advised to use caution when out at night near streets.

Anyone with information on the incident is encouraged to call Alamosa Crime Stoppers at 589-4111. Information leading to the identification and arrest of the assailant(s) may result in a cash award. Calls to Crime Stoppers may be made anonymously.

"We have no reason to believe that this was anything other than a random attack," Shults added. "This was a painful and cowardly thing to do. I've been in the business a long time and this is one of the most mean spirited crimes I've seen. Somebody knows who did this thing, and they need to let us know. There aren't many people cruising around Alamosa with a blow gun."
