Atencio keeps art heritage alive

(08-29-2008)

Carlos Atencio honors his grandparent's memory by carving Santos and creating weavings. A teacher by trade, Atencio taught at Centennial High School in San Luis for 20 years. He is determined to share his knowledge of cultural arts.

During the last three years, he has offered classes in weaving through Centennial High School's Century 21 Grant. Because the funding was depleted this year, ASC Community Partnerships joined Centennial High School to support Atencio's teaching efforts.

He will demonstrate his work at Hispanic Heritage Day from 12 p.m. until 4 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 6, in Cole Park. His work, along with 13 of his students' work will be exhibited at the Luther Bean Museum from Sept. 15 through Oct. 15, the museum hours are 8 a.m. until 5 p.m. Tuesdays through Fridays.

A closing reception will be held from 4 p.m. until 6 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 15. For more information, please call 719-587-7372 or 719-587-7401.
