Adams State College Financial Aid Office reaches out to veterans

(02-27-2008)

In an effort to recognize and assist Adams State College student veterans the Office of Financial Aid has hired Jimmy Dittmar to help all current veterans with an education benefit questions.

According to Phil Schroeder, director of financial aid, a goal of the new position is for veterans to receive the utmost care in dealing with the Montgomery Bill's educational benefits. The position is work-study through the Veterans Administration.

"Jimmy Dittmar is a veteran himself," Schroeder said. "He will assist the veterans with any educational issues or help them find the help; however, it must be related to veteran services only."

One note regarding the certification of enrollment, Diane Mondragon, Office of Records, will continue to serve as the veteran certification officer. Her office is located in Richardson Hall in the Enrollment Management Office.

Another responsibility for Dittmar is outreach and recruitment of returning servicemen. "With so many young men and women returning form military duty, the need for education outreach is in high demand," Schroeder said.

According to Schroeder Dittmar will also recruit recently released veterans.

Dittmar, a senior elementary education major, served for four years in the navy. Although he missed eligibility for the Montgomery GI Bill, he does receive disability from the service. "I can help veterans with their questions about benefits from the military," he said. "Maybe there are other veterans in a situation like me, that don't know about other services," he said. "I will be able to help them."

Dittmar will also help veterans with financial aid and finding tutors. He and Dr. Richard Goddard, assistant professor of social studies, are establishing a veteran's club. "I would like to connect and reach out to other veterans," Dittmar said. "I see the veterans club as being a support group and it will let other veterans in San Luis Valley know we are here, and care about each other and the community."

"I encourage anyone receiving veteran benefits to contact Jimmy with any questions," Schroeder said.
