Colorado Day of Percussion is February 22 at Adams State College
The Adams State College Music Department will host the Colorado Day of Percussion from 10:30 a.m. until 5:30 p.m. Sunday, Feb. 22, in Leon Memorial and the Music Building.
The featured artist is Valerie Naranjo, Saturday Night Live and Broadway Percussion and World Music Specialist, with performances by the ASC Percussion Ensemble, Ft. Lewis College Percussion Ensemble, and the ASC Steel Drum Band. Other artists will include Jonathan Latta, Ft. Lewis College; Shilo Stroman, Colorado State University; and James Doyle, Adams State. The event is sponsored by the Percussive Arts Society, Pearl/Adams, Vic Firth Inc, and Avedis Zildjian. For more information check out the website Mandara Music.
The event will begin with a musical remembrance performance for those in the musical community who have recently passed. Other events will include a Zimbabwean Marimba clinic by Naranjo for all in participation (no percussion experience necessary), a hand drum workshop, drum set clinic, traditional Ewe drumming and dance, and conclude with a 4 p.m. performance featuring all artists and ensembles in participation.
The entire event is designed to benefit percussion professionals through music enthusiasts. All are welcome to attend and participate, regardless of percussion experience. The event is free to AS&F and Friends of Music, and $1 for students, $5 for adults. Participation in all or parts of the event is also encouraged. Door prizes will be available.
