Memory Plays open February 24 at Adams State College (02-20-09)

The Adams State College Theatre Department production "The Memory Plays," directed by Emily Stiles and Beth Tantanella, opens at 8 p.m. Tuesday, Feb. 24, in the Xperimental Theatre. The show continues nightly at 8 p.m. through February 28. Tickets are $7 for general admission, $6 for seniors and students, and free to Adams State Associated Students and Faculty. Call 719-587-TIXX for reservations. Opening night has already sold out.

"The Memory Plays" are so dubbed by the directors because the one-act productions deal with memory. Stiles is directing "Obscura" by Dennis Schebetta. She said the play deals with memories past and present and re-living memories and where "you fit in." The production is a drama with humorous aspects. "Directing this play was challenging for me and my actors because the memories are not in chronological order but move back and forth through time," Stiles said. "I have enjoyed giving the new students in the program a shot at being on stage."

Tantanella is directing "The Crown Prince of Perfect," by J. Boyer. In the play, a couple is going through therapy to soften their divorce. Their counselor is helping them remember their reason for falling in love. Tantanella said the romantic comedy is funny and thoughtful, something "people can relate to." She said the highlight of directing is passing along the skills she has learned on stage, as an actor, to new, developing actors.

"Emily and I have been friends since we met four years ago as freshman," Tantanella said. Both she and Stiles said it was fun to work together in directing the two one-acts. Tantanella is auditioning at the Southeastern Theater Conference in March for graduate schools and professional theater companies. Stiles is returning this summer to the Creede Repertory Theatre, where she worked last summer.
