Grizzly Activity Board sponsors film “Pushing the Elephant”
"Pushing the Elephant" is the inspiring story of Rose Mapendo. When civil war came to Rose's Congolese village, she was separated from her five-year-old daughter, Nangabire. Rose managed to escape with nine of her 10 children and was eventually resettled in Phoenix, Arizona. More than a decade later, mother and daughter are reunited in the U.S. where they must come to terms with the past and build a new future. This powerful documentary takes us on her journey to bring violence against women from the international level to a local level.
A free screening of "Pushing the Elephant", coming to PBS on Independent Lens, March 2011, is scheduled for 6:30 p.m. Tuesday, March 1, in Adams State College Carson Auditorium. The film is presented by ITVS Community Cinema, ScSEED, & Ute Theatre Community Partners and sponsored by the Adams State Grizzly Activity Board.
Financial despair, rape, social ostracism--these are the hidden effects of war rarely spoken about in the media, but explored in "Pushing the Elephant". Going beyond tragedy, the film tells the story of a woman who emerged from the violence in the Democratic Republic of Congo as a committed advocate for the rights of women and for forgiveness and reconciliation. Join us for this powerful screening event and discussion examining violence against women in our own community and the local heroes who tirelessly work to reverse the cycles of violence. "When you don't forgive others, you keep building a hell for yourself" says "Pushing the Elephant" subject Rose Mapendo. Hear from others who have found ways to transform tragedy into hope at this month's Community Cinema event.
