STEM Saturdays continue at Adams State
As part of Adams State University and Title V STEM's ongoing efforts to influence student success in Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) Programs, STEM Saturdays continue this spring.
These free interactive sessions are open to the public and will stimulate the imagination and curiosity of students. Topics range across the spectrum, including biology, robotics, earth science, chemistry, computer science and mathematics. All sessions are designed with specific grade-level, developmentally appropriate lessons in mind.
Sessions are scheduled from 9 a.m. until noon. Reservations are required as enrollment is limited.
- February 1 – "Robotics and Interactive Art with Sensors and Arduinos," George Sellman, assistant professor of computer science, grades 6-12; enrollment cap is 12.
- February 15 – "Optics, Telescopes, and the Sky," Dr. Robert Astalos, associate professor of physics, grades 5-8; enrollment cap is 16.
- March 1 – "Polymers and Plastics," Dr. Marty Jones, emeritus professor of chemistry, grades 5-8; enrollment cap is 16.
- March 15 – "Fossil ID: What is That Ancient Dead Thing?," Lyle Carbutt, adjunct instructor of biology and earth science, grades 4-8; enrollment cap is 16.
- April 5 – "The Scientific Method and a Survey of Life," Dr. Kristy Duran, assistant professor of biology, grades 4-6; enrollment cap is 16.
- April 19 – "Robotics using Arduinos – for Girls," George Sellman, assistant professor of computer science, grades 6-12; enrollment limited to 12 females.
- May 3 – "Creating and Controlling Lego Robots," Dr. Matt Nehring, chair of the chemistry, computer science and mathematics department, grades 4-6; enrollment cap is 16.
Registration is required. Once registered, participants will receive the location of session and any other pertinent information. Only parent/guardian authorized registrations will be accepted. Session registrations are limited to 2 sessions per student. No cost to participants. Each student will receive a t-shirt when they arrive to the session.
