International musician and activist Ahmad in concert at Adams State College (03-04-09)

Adams State College is bringing internationally known musician Salman Ahmad, of the music group Junoon, with Samir Chatterjee, for the Madness for Peace Concert at 7 p.m. Saturday, April 4, in the Adams State College Richardson Hall Auditorium. Preceding the concert, Ahmad will premier his movie, "The Rock Star and the Mullahs" at 3 p.m. also in Richardson Hall Auditorium.

Salman Concert

At 5 p.m., enjoy traditional South-Asian cuisine with Ahmad and Chatterjee in the La Mesa Dining Hall located in the Student Union Building, prepared by Sodexo. Without a meal ticket, cost is $7.

Ahmad, lead guitarist and founding member of Junoon, South Asia's most popular rock band, is often referred to as the Bono of Asia. He is an official UN goodwill ambassador, AIDS awareness activist, vocal proponent of nuclear disarmament, and a tireless promoter of the moderate - and distinctly modern - attitudes of Muslims around the world.

Ahmad's film "The Rock Star and the Mullahs," follows him as he journeys to the tolerant, ancient city of Lahore and the fundamentalist stronghold of Peshawar to reveal the internal religious and political conflicts of nuclear-armed Pakistan. The mullahs want to ban the music but Junoon's fans, among them Pakistani President Pervez Musharraf, have made Salman a rock idol. From this trip emerges a rich portrait of modern day Pakistan, a pivotal nation in the war against terror.

Chatterjee is a virtuoso table player from India. He belongs to the Farrukhabad Gharana. He travels widely across the world throughout the year performing in numerous festivals as a soloist or with other outstanding musicians from both Indian and western traditions. His compositions are widely acclaimed as well as his writings.

Movie tickets are free for AS&F and $5 for general admission; concert tickets are $20 for general admission and free to AS&F. Pre-purchase block tickets are $30 for individual, $25 for group of 10 or more persons. Overnight group rates are also available. For more information contact Masood Ahmad, Adams State director of student engagement and success, 719-587-7858 or email masoodahmad@adams.edu.
