Expert on global feminism speaks at Adams State (03-12-09)
The Department of Sociology at Adams State College cordially invites all community members to attend speaker Dr. Aditi Mitra's keynote address: "Time to focus, time to act: Global women's networks and bridges across generations". This speech launches the Undergraduate Sociology Conference at 7 p.m. Friday, March 27, in Carson Auditorium, located in the ASC Student Union Building. The event is free and open to the public.
Mitra's speech will trace the history of International Women's Day and global feminism by focusing on how women are creating international alliances of social activism and advocacy. She will highlight how these groups generate awareness about social justice and diversity to help create a better world.
Mitra, assistant professor of sociology and women's and ethnic studies at University of Colorado at Colorado Springs, was born in India, but raised in several countries, in Asia, the middle-east and Europe. She completed primary and secondary school in United Arab Emirates (UAE), then received her bachelor's degree (with honors) in English literature from India. Mitra was a British Chevening Scholar in England (UK) where she earned her master's degree in mass communication before obtaining her doctorate in sociology in the U.S.
Mitra's teaching and research areas of specialization are social inequality, social psychology, gender, globalization, women's studies, non-governmental organizations (NGOs), social activism, culture and business communication, mass media and international relations.
Mitra is also a social activist, working with several national and international NGOs in the U.S. and abroad. She was elected vice president of the National Organization for Women (NOW) at the Stillwater Chapter in Oklahoma from 2003-2004. In 2005 she was a representative and regular panelist at the Interfaith Alliance Council at Oklahoma and specialized in the area of women and world religions. Whenever she visits India, she volunteers for Nobel Laureate Mother Teresa's "Shishubhavan" in Calcutta. Mitra has several published articles in international scholarly journals and books. Currently, she is authoring a book on women and social activism in India. In her free time, she volunteers to teach meditation and yoga to anyone who is interested.
