Paul Newman is tired, but excited. For the past several weeks, he, the largest cast of this year's Adams State Theatre Department's repertoire and a crew of technicians have been working long hours on this year's showcase production, Peter Pan.
"We decided after the success of last year's performance of A Christmas Carol to do a production that would appeal to the wider community," said Newman, who is directing Adams State's production of Peter Pan.
"Everyone is going to enjoy the flying, and I will too," Newman said. "It's one of those things that you don't do that often, but when you do, it's fun."
Newman said while he has directed productions of Peter Pan in the past, he is looking forward to this year's production, as the play continues to develop new meaning for him. He said he feels children and adults will enjoy the production, which will delight first-time theater goers, and veterans of the stage will see a new way of looking at the boy who refused to grow up. "The story is all about mothers, and what motherly love is all about," Newman said. "The lost boys are redeemed by mothers."
Newman said the size of the cast for Peter Pan is so large, the department had to break one of its rules for the production.
"We had to cast freshmen actors," Newman said. Newman said he is impressed with the talent of this year's freshmen class, so breaking the rule - just once - wasn't a problem.
"Our freshmen class is really strong this year, not only as actors, but as students," he said.
