Extrasolar Planet Workshop offered at Adams State (11-02-2009)
The Adams State College Zacheis Planetarium and Observatory is presenting an Extrasolar Planet Workshop at 7:00 p.m. Friday, Nov. 13 and at 1:00 p.m. Saturday, November 14. The event is free and open to the public. Reservations are required and can be made by emailing rwemmons@adams.edu or calling Leslie at 719-587-7256; please provide your name and the number of people attending.
Dr. Randy Emmons, professor of physics, said when most people are asked, "how many planets have we observed?" most will respond "nine." He said whether or not Pluto is counted, which astronomers decided in 2006 did not fit the definition of a planet, the right answer is 400.
The workshop will involve a presentation on the life cycle of stars and a theory of solar system evolution. These lectures will be followed by activities on Doppler Shifts, Stellar Spectra and Movement in a Solar System. The concluding discussion will focus on techniques used in searching for extrasolar planets and the results of those searches.
The workshops will be held in the Adams State Science Activity Center, located in the Community Partnership Building, north end, immediately south of Richardson Hall on the Adams State campus in Alamosa, Colo. The duration of the workshops will be approximately two hours. The two workshops are free but reservations are required as seating is limited.
