Adams State University music student Skyler Choice, the first recipient of the Don Richmond Music Scholarship, wants to connect students and community. Therefore, he designed Classically Contemporary, a concert to showcase music students and to benefit La Puente Home, Inc.

"I believe La Puente does a lot of good in Alamosa and the community," Choice said.

The event will begin at 3 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 20, at Milagros Coffee House; located at 529 Main St. in Alamosa, Colo. Admission is a suggested donation of $3. The concert will feature music students performing in both classical and contemporary styles.

Choice said music students are classically trained and he wanted to showcase those talents, as well as the diversity of music they enjoy playing. The concert will include pop, jazz, and folk songs. Choice and others will perform pieces they composed. "I am a vocal performance major and enjoy writing music as well."

According to Dr. Tracy Doyle, Music Department chair, recipients of the scholarship are required to do some kind of community outreach.
