The Board of Trustees for Adams State University approved ASU 2020, the university’s strategic plan for 2016-20, at its May meeting, held on campus. ASU 2020 details five goals that will guide the university’s initiatives and budget priorities over the next five years. Each goal includes a set of specific strategic initiatives and activities to further its attainment.
“This is one of the most important things you will approve. It is very exciting,” Adams State President Beverlee J. McClure told the board. “Dr. Matt Nehring is to be commended for leading this very inclusive process. The plan includes outcomes and measures assessment. New budget requests must tie to one of these goals, so we really are walking the talk. It’s difficult to project five years into the future, so this is definitely a living document that will allow us to respond to changes in the external environment.” She said a monthly report will keep trustees updated on progress toward the goals and that work on the next five-year plan will begin in 2019.
“This is a strategic plan like very few I’ve ever seen. It’s about as good as it gets. I feel I’m going to part of very well managed university. You got the faculty and staff to engage and take on the challenge,” said Arnold Salazar, chair of the trustee board. “This is a beautiful picture of where this institution is going. The things that really come through are academic excellence and student success. Goals are so important. Five years from now, I think we’re going to have unbelievable success.”
Faculty Trustee Rob Benson said the plan is shared governance in action. “Each of us is taking responsibility for what needs to be done.”
The goals are as follows:
Goal 1: Academic Excellence
Adams State University will provide challenging and responsive curricula that educate, serve, and inspire our diverse populations.
Goal 2: Student Success
Adams State University will address diverse student needs by offering varied learning opportunities and support services for all students to achieve educational, personal, and career successes.
Goal 3: Personal and Professional Development
Adams State University will provide educational and professional development opportunities for faculty and staff.
Goal 4: Access & Affordability
Adams State University will develop innovative pricing and aid strategies that will maximize opportunities for our diverse and historically underserved students for all levels and delivery models.
Goal 5: Community Relations
Adams State University will collaborate with the community to provide culturally responsive and sustainable development opportunities that mutually benefit the campus and the San Luis Valley community.
Trustee Randy Wright added that community input was gathered from community members across the valley, including leadership of the Great Sand Dunes National Park & Preserve.
