The Adams State University Lifeways of the San Luis Valley Lecture will feature Norma Mendoza speaking on best practices in serving students impacted by the DREAM Act. Her lecture, Education for All: How to Best Serve the DREAMers of Our Nation, begins at 6 p.m. Wednesday, Sept. 14, in McDaniel Hall, room 101.
Mendoza was recently the subject of a social media viral frenzy. As a young lady hailing from a mixed-status family, she opted to drive her mother from their home state of Texas to attend her graduation in Boston. Mendoza was receiving her graduate degree in public policy from Harvard University’s John F. Kennedy School of Government and wanted to have her mother in attendance. After all, Mendoza is a first generation college student who has achieved a great deal, first attending Rice University, and going on to the Kennedy School on a full scholarship. She wants to share her story, in how getting her mother to the ceremony was a difficult decision, due to immigration policies.

The lecture is a component of the ASU’s celebration of HSI (Hispanic-Serving Institution) Week and in collaboration with the Lifeways of the San Luis Valley Lecture Series, which celebrates the rich history and diversity of the San Luis Valley. The lecture series are made possible through ASU CIELO and Office of Title V Grant Initiatives.
Parking is located east of McDaniel Hall. Adams State parking lots do not require permits after 5 p.m.
