The Adams State University Theatre production, Heart’s Desire and Jeremy two one-acts directed by senior theatre majors Violet Ramsey and Amanda Cahill, opens at 7:30 p.m. Wednesday, October 17 and continues nightly through October 20 in the Xperimental Theatre.
Ramsey chose the comedy Heart’s Desire, written by Caryl Churchill, because “I have always fondness for the absurd.” The play was required reading for one of her theatre classes. “Something about this specific play and potential for directing really spoke to me.” As she read she envisioned ways it could be staged and presented. “I found producing the play gave me intense creative freedom not afforded with any other kind of show.”
Adams State theatre alumnus James Rodriguez wrote Jeremy, at the request of Cahill. “I approached James with the idea of writing about an alternative world because I wanted to show ideas on stage not usually seen,” Cahill said. Rodriguez expanded a short ten-minute piece using Cahill’s suggestions. “In this drama, gay is the norm and straight people struggle for equality,” Cahill added. “I hope the audience will have an eye-opening experience.”
The Adams State Theatre Department offers its majors a variety of opportunities and experiences in the world of theatre. Ramsey, who will graduate in May of 2019, described her directing experience as “incredibly surreal.” Throughout her academic career she has taken roles as a designer, stage manager, and actor. “Being a director is probably the most fun I have ever had in theatre while at the same time being constantly and unequivocally terrifying. It is an epic journey, but well worth it.”
Cahill agrees; “I like directing so much more than acting. Right now, all is on track for a smooth opening.” After graduation in December, Cahill will remain in Alamosa with plans to eventually move to Minneapolis, Minn., and begin her career in theatre. “Here at Adams State you graduate well-prepared for all aspects of theatre. I would be willing to take any position including directing, house manager, on stage moving sets, or working as the sound or light board operator.”
For Cahill, the people in the department make the experience. “We are a family. To be a true theatre major you are in the theatre all the time. You are somehow involved with every show it takes a lot of teamwork.”
Both student directors appreciate the students assisting in making the production a success including Travis Romero, lighting for both acts; Jennifer Perez, Jeremy sound designer; Kaitlyn Willhite, Jeremy hair; Anakay Hanold, Jeremy costume and make-up; Kaleb Burris props for both acts; Hannah Eubanks, Jeremy stage manager; DeAnna Romero, both plays set design; Kathryn Kinney Heart’s Desire hair, make-up and costume; Raelyn Robinson Heart’s Desire stage manager.
Ramsey will graduate in May 2019 and eventually wants to return to Chicago. “The most admirable quality in theatre production is the raw force of willpower and ingenuity from theatre majors. Everyone here has learned when you really want to realize your dream at some point you need to commit work, effort, and time, and sometimes make sacrifices or overcome disappointment to maintain that dream. It can be somewhat hellish, but it is worth it in end if you really and truly want your dream realized.”
Heart’s Desire and Jeremy each last about 40 minutes, with a 10 minute intermission between them.
Due to subject matter and language, the directors recommend audience members be 18-years-old or older. This production may trigger seizures due to flashing lights.
