The Adams State University Model United Nations Team will host four regional high schools for the SOCOMUN 2018 High School Conference on Friday and Saturday.
Members of Adams State’s Model United Nations Team will also use the conference to share their experience of attending international Model UN collegiate conferences to help the high school teams see the benefits of continuing on with the Model United Nations Teams when in college.
Teams representing Alamosa High, Monte Vista High, Del Norte High and Pagosa Springs High will participate in the weekend conference. The conference is being organized and run by ASU Model UN President and Secretary General Mariah McDermott, Communication Secretary Huber Price, Logistics Secretary and Committee Chair Sean Erice, Finance Secretary Destiny Comstock, Secretary for Communications Trina DeHerrera, Committee Chair Ashely Swanson, Club Advisor and Professor of Political Science Mari Centeno, Ph.D., and general members Tiffany Sherman and Joshua Clark.
Following registration at noon on Friday, the high school Model UN students will tour the Adams State campus, and then meet with college students at McDaniel Hall for an opening ceremony before moving into breakout sessions where they will debate current global issues.
“Half the high school students will begin with the Economic and Social Council debate,” McDermott said. “The other half will meet for a General Assembly.”
The Model UN Conference will include a special dinner social at the Cultural Awareness and Student Achievement (CASA) Center. Saturday begins with continuing session debates. An awards ceremony will conclude the Model UN Conference.
