Shine your shoes and make your bed every morning is advice from Lt. Col. Patricia “Patty” Robertson, Air Force Veteran of 33 years, to Adams State University Student Leaders. Accomplishing something every morning is a great way to start the day.
During her keynote address at the 11th annual Student Leadership Banquet, on March 28, Robertson inspired her listeners to be disciplined, a good follower first, find a mentor and be a mentor, never be afraid to challenge up and support down, rise up, and treat the janitor the same as the CEO.
The event, sponsored by Co-Curricular Recreation and Engagement Office (CoRE), honored student leaders on campus, from freshmen to seniors, transfer students, and non-traditional students. Over 60 students were nominated for awards by University faculty, staff, or administrators for their outstanding leadership demonstrated in offices, academic departments, athletic teams, or through service in the San Luis Valley community.
Quint Seckler, MC and Adams State swim coach, welcomed the room. “The students in this room demonstrate incredible leadership and what it truly means to be a Grizzly.”
Award recipients included: Grecia Diaz-Martinez, Bridge Builder Leadership; Sheniqua Griffith, Legacy of Leadership; Caleb Baumgartner, Residence Life Leadership; Abbey Stagner, Outstanding Club Member Leadership; Brandi Watts, Academic Mentor Leadership; Alejandro Tovar Sosa, Outstanding Contribution to Inclusion and Diversity; Briana Gonzales, Exemplary Service Leadership; Nicolette Jones, Recreation Leadership; Isabel Munson, Emerging Leader; Sarah Patterson, Wellness and Prevention Services Leadership; Janet Najar, CoRE Leadership; Taylor Mills, Student Office Leadership Support; and Natalie Rogers, associate professor of business and PBLA advisor, Advisor of the Year.
Vice President of Student Services Ken Marquez presented Sheniqua Griffith with the Vice President for Student Services Outstanding Leadership Award, which included a $1,000 scholarship and $100 VISA Gift Card. Griffith has served as a Resident Assistant, the President of Multicultural Student Governance, New Student Orientation Mentor, on the Grizzly Activities Board, in Student Life, in CASA activities and many other organizations and committees across campus. “Sheniqua has been a part of so many amazing things on are campus,” Marquez said. “She is an amazing leader and also always has a huge smile on her face.”
Adams State President Cheryl Lovell recognized all students nominated and expressed her appreciation for their dedication to being a Grizzly Leader in all aspects of their lives.
