Adams State University received a $10,000 Xcel Energy Education Grant to help fund Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) Saturdays.
The project began several years ago and offered free workshops to San Luis Valley school-aged children. In the past, the STEM Saturdays were offered exclusively on-campus. With the Xcel grant, STEM Saturdays can now be held off-campus and in Valley schools.
According to Angie Sandy, Title V STEM activity director, this is the second year Xcel has awarded the grant for the Adams State STEM Saturdays project. “Our project goal this year is to provide five off-campus STEM Saturdays and four on-campus STEM Saturday events.”
Before the COVID-19 pandemic, an off-campus STEM Saturday was held in Del Norte Elementary School in February, 2020. When the pandemic shut down schools, an Adams State professor was able to host his STEM Saturday remotely.
Adams State STEM Saturdays include a variety of subjects organized and lead by faculty from many disciplines including chemistry, physics, mathematics, and biology.
