Post Baccalaureate Alternative Teacher License with Masters in Curriculum & Instruction
Adams State University’s alternative licensure program is an online program designed for working professionals who wish to become licensed teachers in Colorado. The program offers initial licensure in elementary, secondary and K-12 education. It provides candidates with coursework, supervised field experience, and student teaching supervision to help prepare them for effective teaching in the classroom. The program is flexible, affordable, and offers a dedicated advisor to assist candidates throughout their licensure and degree program.
Authorized Alternative Endorsements
The Adams State School of Education has been authorized by the Colorado Department of Education in the following alternative endorsements:
- Elementary Education
- Secondary Education (English, Mathematics, Science, Business, and Social Studies)
- K12 Education (Music, Visual Arts, Physical Education, and World Languages)
Eligibility for Alternative Licensure
To be eligible for alternative licensure, candidates must be hired by a school district in one of the areas listed above. Candidates must also demonstrate content knowledge for the specific endorsement area by taking and passing the appropriate PRAXIS II exam before receiving the statement of assurance for the alternative licensure program. You may be able to satisfy coursework requirements from an undergraduate degree or advanced degrees. Transcripts can be submitted through the COOL account for review by the state as part of your alternative license application. For the required PRAXIS exams by content, please see the attached document. PRAXIS scores should be sent to Adams State University.
MA Degree Plan
The alternative licensure option currently available follows the degree progression for MA degree, which makes it easy and affordable to obtain a master’s degree and the initial license during your first year of teaching in the classroom. Tuition Structure and Funding Options
The tuition structure for the alternative program also mimics the graduate coursework costs. Please note that you will not be eligible for federal financial aid if you are not seeking a degree; however, you may qualify for state funding. Please check with the Colorado Department of Education for more guidance and information on available funding options to support alternative licensure candidates.

During your program, you will have a dedicated advisor to assist you with the processes of registration, practicum & field experience documentation, coursework support, applying for your license, and more.
Online Courses, Learning Modules, and Seminars
You will also be enrolled in online courses, learning modules, and seminars led by faculty of the School of Education to assist you in the theory to practice transformation process.
