A thriving community needs people who understand the connection between water and pretty much everything else, from the environment to the economy to our food supply to our future.

To help students and community members better understand the water challenges and opportunities in the San Luis Valley, Adams State University is offering the introductory Water 101: Water Essentials: How Water Works in the West course for the fall 2023 semester.

Water 101 will be taught by agronomist and educator Maya ter Kuile-Miller. She brings her deep knowledge and understanding of water to the program and is teaching the course in order to help students and community members broaden their knowledge of the many issues surrounding water. Maya ter Kuile-Miller believes participants will gain a working knowledge of how water is managed in Colorado. Participants will join Adams State students to learn directly from experts, local water users and managers. Field trips will provide hands-on understanding of regional water use on the ground.

Community members can register to audit Water 101 as a “Listening Course” for $150 for the full semester.  Register online.

In addition to being available to Adams State students, high schools can enroll in this course as a concurrent class, for early college credits, through their school counselor.

Adams State students enrolled in the course are eligible for $400 scholarships for WATR 101.

The water studies classes are designed to:

  • Prepare students for challenges that lay ahead,
  • Enhance professional development across diverse career paths, and
  • Increase community and civic participation for a sustainable future.
