Experience a theatrical hug during the feel-good drama “Tiny Beautiful Things;” it will make you laugh as well as tug at your heart strings. The Adams State University Theatre production opens at 7:30 p.m. Friday, Sept. 29, in the Xperimental Theatre.
“Tiny Beautiful Things” is based on a book by Cheryl Strayed, about her experiences as an anonymous advice columnist from 2010 through 2012. Nia Vardalos, creator of “My Big Fat Greek Wedding,” adapted the book for stage.
Adams State Theatre Professor Jenna Neilsen, M.F.A., said it is the most beautifully written play she has read in the last 10 years. “The issues, from the 2010 time period, are handled very carefully and with empathy. The play is about forgiveness and acceptance.”
Neilsen chose to stage the performance in the more intimate setting of the Xperimental Theatre. “The advice is beautiful and I believe audience members will leave feeling better connected to their fellow man and their own humanity.”
Senior theatre major Olivia “Livv” Huffmaster plays Sugar, the advice columnist. Emi Norfolk, Isaac Sisneros, and Nate Pixley, round out the cast as letter writers and other characters. The play is based on real people who wrote legitimate letters seeking advice.
The 70-minute play takes place one night as Sugar stays up; simultaneously performing household/mom chores as she makes real human connections with the letter writers.
Strayed has written several books, including “Wild,” based on her experiences hiking solo along the Pacific Coast Trail. Hulu adapted “Tiny Beautiful Things” into a series. “The core of the production is about listening to others and meeting them where they are,” Neilsen added.
“Tiny Beautiful Things” continues at 7:30 p.m. Sept. 30, and Oct. 6 & 7; and 2 p.m. Oct. 8. Tickets are $13 for general public and free to Associated Students and Faculty with current Adams State identification.
