See the photos and hear the stories of training, life in Base Camp, and the adventure of climbing the world’s highest mountain by the climber himself, Darren Rogers. A graduate of Alamosa High School and Adams State, Rogers will engage the audience with his compelling account of tireless commitment to training and the unbelievable experiences on the mountain. As part of the Alamosa Rio Frio Ice Fest, the presentation begins at 7 p.m. in Adams State University’s Carson Auditorium (Student Union Building) on Thursday, January 26. The event is free and open to the public.
Rogers grew up in Alamosa and graduated from Adams State with a Bachelor of Science in chemistry in 1992. He has climbed many of Colorado’s Fourteeners and has traveled to remote parts of the world, testing his mental fortitude at high altitude to reach mountaintops in Africa, Bolivia, Ecuador, Tibet, and Nepal. In 2015, he set his sights on Mt. Everest and Lhotse. While he was at Camp 1 at 20,000 feet, a 7.8 magnitude earthquake struck Nepal. Subsequent avalanches made the Khumbu Ice-Fall impassable, and Rogers was rescued by helicopter. He returned to Nepal in 2016 for a successful summit of Mt. Everest. Rogers is president of CH4+ Engineering in Sheridan, Wyoming.
