Frank DeAngelis spoke to an engaged audience during the Adams State University "Trauma Experiences and Management Strategies (TEAMS)" symposium, on March 15, in Carson Auditorium.
DeAngelis, principal of Columbine High School for 18 years, retired in 2014. He had pledged to remain principal until the students who were in the Columbine elementary school at the time of the massacre graduated high school. He received a standing ovation after speaking from personal experience on managing the effects of trauma.
The symposium had 160 on-site attendees and 40 attendees that accessed the sessions through a live feed, and included representatives from Alamosa, Monte Vista, Center, and Del Norte school districts. Representatives from Alamosa and Rio Grande DHS, SLV Behavioral Health Group, SLV Joint IOG, probation, Tu Casa, La Puente, PALS, and counselors from private practice groups also attended.
Dr. Janessa Henninger, assistant professor of counselor education, organized the event. "The TEAMS Symposium had a wonderful turn out. Our community partners, community speakers, and counselor education student volunteers came together to provide an enriching day of education and self-care for individuals that service the SLV community. This was an excellent example of community collaboration over such an important topic, community crisis and trauma."
The event was sponsored by Adams State University Counselor Education Department in partnership with SLV Behavioral Health Group, the SLV Joint Interagency Oversight Group and Tu Casa.
