Adams State University agricultural business students Miranda Sandoval ’18 and Pauline Luhman ’19 competed in the Daniels’ Fund Ethics Initiative (DFEI) case study competition at the University of Colorado at Colorado Springs on November 2.
Zena Buser, professor of business, said: "The competition was a good experience and they represented the university admirably."
Stepping out of their comfort zone and presenting to a room of unfamiliar faces was a positive experience for them. "This year was my first year competing so I was not sure what to expect. Normally, standing and presenting is very nerve-racking for me," Luhman said. "I am proud to say I cannot wait to try it again next year to see what I am really made of."
Sandoval agreed: "I also enjoyed meeting new people and receiving constructive criticism as feedback because this is what prepares you for your future career."
In general the Adams State agricultural business program has prepared Sandoval and Luhman for their future professions. "The program has strengthened my critical thinking skills and has pushed me to think about agriculture in a whole new way," Sandoval said. It is more than the day-to-day operations that go on a farm or ranch. "It is about applying what you learn in the classroom to real life. I am definitely not the student I was four years ago thanks to Dr. Buser," she added.
Although Luhman does not come from an agricultural background, she hopes to stay involved in the profession. "The agricultural business program is preparing me to achieve my future plans of helping others, whether helping a farmer or rancher by keeping their records and paperwork organized to educating future generations on the importance of agriculture."
Sandoval, a senior from Antonito, plans on attending graduate school. "I eventually plan to return to my hometown and make a difference in the lives of the many young students by educating them about agriculture." Luhman, a junior, is from Abiquiu, NM, and hopes to remain in the San Luis Valley after graduating.
Buser appreciates the Adams State Foundation and Alumni Relations Office for helping with conference travel expenses.
