Tri-Beta strives to enhance Adams State student interest in all divisions of the biological sciences by providing volunteer/community service activities, a forum for undergraduate research, and a peer support group outside of the classroom.
To foster student research, the National Tri-Beta Honor Society has competitive research grants available as well as a quarterly publication for undergraduate research proceedings.
The club attends an annual regional conference, which rotates locations including the Adams State campus. This meeting provides student members an opportunity to view other undergraduate research as well as present their own, while competing for awards. Meeting awards include certificates, paid transportation/lodging for presentations at the biennial National Tri-Beta Conference, and monetary awards to fund additional research.
In addition to helping foster undergraduate research, the club is involved in many volunteer/community service projects on and off campus. Along with outreach work the club also holds fundraising activities and schedules club social events, allowing members to meet and interact with other students in the biological sciences.
Volunteer/Community Service Projects
- Walking dogs at local animal shelters
- Staffing the visitors center at Monte Vista & Alamosa National Wildlife Refuges
- Animal care and facility cleaning at Colorado Gators Reptile Park
- Diet & health demonstrations at the Monte Vista & Alamosa Middle Schools
- Handing out tickets for shows at the Zacheis Planetarium
- Cleaning up litter as part of the Adopt-a-highway program through CDOT
- Judging at the regional San Luis Valley Science Fair
Fundraising/Club Social Activities
- Selling food at Adams State Cares Day & the Autumn at Adams Chili Cook-off
- Selling plants on campus
- Writing science educational articles for the Adams State Paw Print newspaper
- Participating in the homecoming parade
- Social evening at Milagros Coffee House
- Camping at the Great Sand Dunes National Park
Membership
All interested students are encouraged to participate in club activities. Additionally, students who qualify academically for membership and induction into the National Tri-Beta Honor Society are highly encouraged to fill out the
- Tri-Beta Application Form
and return it to the club faculty advisor. Regular members inducted in the national honor society are granted lifetime membership. Additionally, full members are also eligible for officer positions for the local chapter.
