Piano Institute Description

Adams State Summer Piano Institute offers rising 8th grade – 12th grade intermediate to advanced pianists the opportunity to grow their piano skills in a vibrant and nurturing environment. Throughout the week, students will:

  • Receive individual and group piano instruction and mentorship with ASU faculty and other professional pianists
  • Attend a dynamic variety of classes on topics such as piano repertoire, performance, and practice
  • Explore relevant musical topics such as piano duets, music theory, and movement for musicians (and more!)
  • Participate in recitals and masterclasses
  • Perform in a world class music hall and practice in professional music facilities
  • Experience professional live recitals
  • Develop friendships with other musicians
  • Enjoy recreational activities

Whether you are preparing for auditions and competitions or simply hoping to improve as a pianist while making friends, ASU’s Summer Piano Institute will help you achieve your goals.

Eligibility

  • Rising 8th – 12th grade students. Students who have just graduated from high school are also welcome.
  • Intermediate to advanced level of playing with the ability to read music at an intermediate level or higher. Prior piano instruction is expected.

Enrollment

  • Enrollment will be capped at 18 students. Enrollment is granted on a first-come, first-served basis reserved with your registration and receipt of full payment.
  • A waitlist will be maintained, and you will be notified on May 28th if a spot becomes available.

Fees

  • Residential Participant: $500

(includes shared room, all meals, tuition)

  • Commuter: $400

(includes lunch, dinner, tuition)

  • All students have one private lesson included with tuition. Up to two additional lessons may be added for $35/lesson.
  • Early Bird Discount: Receive a $50 reduction in fees for all applications and payments received before April 1st!
  • Incidental Fees:
    • Parents are responsible for any and all damages caused to Adams State University property.

Scholarships Available!

  • If you are interested in receiving a need-based scholarship, please complete the essay prompt on the registration form.
  • Scholarships will be awarded on a first-come, first-served basis. You will receive a scholarship decision within a week of your registration submission. Please mail your tuition check after you receive a scholarship decision.

Registration and Payment Info

  • Follow the link at the top of the page to register.
  • Please include unrestricted Youtube links to 1-2 videos that represent your current level of playing. In the video description, include the name of the piece and the composer. These videos are not auditions for acceptance but will be used for leveling purposes.
  • Payment Info: Tuition may be paid by check or money order. Please refer to the “Fees” section of the website and include the tuition fee, any additional lessons, and any applicable discounts with your check. Please mail checks to:

Deadlines

  • January 15th: Registration opens
  • April 1st: Early bird discount ends
  • May 27th: Registration and payment deadline
  • May 27th: Cancellation and refund deadline
  • May 28th: Waitlist notification

Refund Policy

  • Full refunds minus a non-refundable fee of $100 will be given if requested before May 27th. No refunds will be given after May 27th.

Sample Schedule

  • Sample Schedule – the final schedule and a packing list will be sent to students a week before the Institute.

Residential Information:

  • Meals are provided at Adams State’s La Mesa Dining Room.
  • Housing will be provided in Girault Hall, which features double occupancy rooms with hall bathrooms.
  • Roommates will be assigned on the basis of grade and gender. If both students request on the registration form to room with each other, the request will be honored if possible.
  • Supervision will be provided by faculty and student chaperones. Institute students are not permitted beyond designated camp areas. Curfews are strictly enforced. Security is provided by ASU police and local law enforcement. Behavioral guidelines will be sent a week prior and discussed at the opening Institute meeting.
