Deadlines & Cohort Information
Currently, there are no application deadlines. Space is limited each semester, therefore, priority is given to complete applications submitted early. Please note that enrollment/admission may end before the aforementioned deadlines.
Our application system tracks students per semester based on application completion date (the date all of your application materials are submitted and the application fee is paid).
The later you complete your application the greater the potential to be considered for a term later than you anticipated. The earlier the better!
School Counseling Certificate online cohorts begin in Fall 2024 and every Summer terms after.
Fall 2024 semester begins Monday, August 19, 2024. To meet the state requirements, you need to take 6 classes (18 credit hours) with us, which includes 6 credit hours of internship in schools. During the fall and spring semesters, you must earn 600 internship hours in schools. 400 in a major setting and 100 each in minor settings. For example, 400 hours in high school, 100 in middle school, and 100 in elementary school. The internship classes will be synchronous, and you will all meet together as a cohort one evening a week for 90 minutes.
In the fall and spring semesters, you will take 9 credits (3 classes). Internship and two asynchronous school counseling classes. The spring semester ends on May 16, 2025.
Admission Requirements
A candidate who is interested in enrolling at Adams State University to pursue the School Counseling Certificate must:
1. Complete the Online Application
2. Pay the $30 non-refundable application fee at the time of application
3. Short Essay Questions

- Why do you want to be a professional school counselor in Colorado? Demonstrate in your response that you have an understanding of the role of the school counselor.
- Describe your experience working with children, youth, and/or in schools.
- How has your experience and background prepared you to promote diversity, equity, and inclusion in a school setting?
- Completed within the online application (highly encouraged to write out prior to copy/paste into online application):
4. Two (2) online recommendation forms from professional sources addressing the ability of the applicant to become a counselor, academic strengths, and potential.
Recommenders will be sent an automatic email to complete the online recommendation form during time of application. Please have recommenders’ first names, last names, and emails at time of application.
5. Send ALL official transcripts from previously attended institutions
Transcripts from Adams State need not be requested. Unofficial transcripts will not be accepted. International transcripts must be evaluated by an approved international credential evaluator. Please have all official transcripts sent directly from the institutions to:

6. Master’s degree from a CACREP-accredited institution or equivalency certificate through CCE-Global (certificate uploaded at time of application if applies)
