Adams State University is launching a new Master of Arts – Humanities degree with an emphasis in Public Administration. The program’s introductory course will be offered during Summer Session 2016.
The 36-credit hour, online program is designed to help current or aspiring professionals in state or local government, as well as non-profit organizations, to acquire appropriate credentials. The program may be completed in two calendar years, and its online format makes it convenient for working professionals.
"The Public Administration program resulted from meetings with local government officials, who expressed the need for advanced study in the field," said Dr. Michael Mumper, who is coordinating the program through Adams State’s Department of History, Anthropology, Philosophy, Political Science, and Spanish (HAPPSS). Sam Mamet, an Adams State alumnus who is Executive Director of the Colorado Municipal League (CML), also requested the program be developed.
Mumper is the instructor for Introduction to Public Administration, a ten-week online course that begins May 16. The course will prepare students for the program, as well as introduce them to graduate school and online learning. Additional coursework, offered beginning with the fall 2016 semester, will develop skills in budgeting, human resources, planning, economic development and emergency management. Five practicum courses will provide students with actual experiences in these areas, through projects and practical activities in a professional setting.
"We have made this affordable; tuition is about one-quarter that of our nearest priced competitor," Mumper added. He explained the program is unique in that it will put theory into practice by aligning coursework with the candidates’ practica experiences.
