Twenty-three high school students from across Colorado are becoming immersed in the sciences the week of June 12 as part of the Migrant Education Program’s STEM Academy at Adams State University. Now in its third year, the week-long academy introduces students to education and career opportunities for STEM (science, technology, engineering, mathematics).
With instruction by Adams State faculty, the students are spending time in laboratories and classrooms, gaining exposure to the range of science disciplines. One highlight is a day-long geology field trip to Del Norte and South Fork.
Students are recruited for the STEM Academy by the Colorado Migrant Program. Requirements include minimum 2.5 grade point average; expressed interest in mathematics, science, engineering, or technology; a written essay; recommendation by a school educator; demonstrated leadership experience, and plans to attend a post-secondary program.
