Internationally recognized violin soloist Chloe Trevor will be featured in the concert "Xochiquetzal: Percussion Works of Goddesses, Earth, Skies, and Souls," to be held Monday, May 1, at 7 p.m. in Adams State University’s Richardson Hall Auditorium. Trevor will perform with the ASU Percussion Ensemble on the work, Xochiquetzal, directed by Dr. James Doyle, associate professor of music.
A chamber concerto for violin soloist and percussion sextet by Robert Xavier Rodriguez, the piece tells the story of Xochiquetzal, the ancient Mayan goddess associated with music, dance, beauty, love, fertility, and female sexual power.
"We are very excited to host Chloe at Adams State," Doyle said. Trevor is quickly becoming one of the most talked about and sought after musical ambassadors to Generation Z, as she combines her spirit for classical music and her passion for mentoring the youth of today to connect on a personal level with audiences in exciting and innovative ways. She has appeared as a soloist with orchestras worldwide, including the Dallas Symphony, Hong Kong Sinfonietta, Houston Symphony, Latvian Chamber Orchestra, Slovak State Philharmonic, Lutoslawski Filharmonie, and the Knoxville Symphony. She made her New York concerto debut in 2013 and Avery Fisher Hall debut in 2014.
Nigel Westlake’s Malachite Glass will feature Adams State clarinet faculty member Alyssa Powell as soloist on bass clarinet. Powell teaches clarinet, saxophone and bassoon at Adams State University. She has been a prestigious concerto soloist with both the University of New Mexico and University of Montana Symphony Orchestras. She has also performed with the New Mexico Philharmonic, Santa Fe Symphony, Performance Santa Fe, San Juan Symphony Orchestra, Missoula Symphony Orchestra, and String Orchestra of the Rockies. Powell also teaches general music at Queen of Heaven School in Albuquerque and is sought as woodwind clinician in many middle and high schools in Albuquerque.
The concert will also feature the premier of Ashen Skies by up-and-coming composer Caleb Pickering, who wrote the piece specifically for the ASU Percussion Ensemble. Uneven Souls for marimba soloist and percussion trio will conclude the performance. On marimba will be junior percussion performance and music education major, Dryden Hill.
