Celebrate the heart and soul of the Southwest. Join Adams State University students for a presentation of dynamic and inspiring stories on the living history of the San Luis Valley. Soul of the Southwest: How Place Shapes Identity begins at 10 a.m. Wednesday, May 7, in McDaniel Hall 101.
The event will include powerful stories, engaging discussions, and a deep dive into the region’s rich history. Senior Lecturer of English Kathleen Chavez and Assistant Professor of Spanish Meliza Ramirez, Ph.D., collaborated with their students in Major Themes and Literature of the Southwest and Spanish Advanced Grammar and Composition Classes, to uncover and translate the remarkable stories of individuals whose families have lived in the Southwest for generations.

The firsthand accounts, filled with resilience, culture, and tradition, will be shared in English and Spanish, bridging past and present through the art of storytelling.
The project includes a curated book of short stories, a website showcasing interviews and translations and an eBook bringing the voices to a wider audience.
