The Adams State University Board of Trustees unanimously adopted a resolution in support of Colorado Proposition CC during a special meeting Friday.
Passage of Proposition CC means all money retained under the proposition must be spent in three areas: higher education; public schools; and roads, bridges and transit. Without increasing taxes, the measure would hike state spending by $310 million in the 2020-21 budget year, and $342 million in the 2021-22 budget year. The law requires the three areas receive equal shares of the money kept.
“The Adams State University Board of Trustees support of Proposition CC is another example of how we are fighting for affordability and fighting for educational opportunities for all students regardless of their socio-economic background,” said ASU Board Chair Michele Lueck.
Adams State recently was named a Top Performer on Social Mobility by U.S. News & World Report Best Colleges 2020 rankings because of its service to students who come from impoverished backgrounds of gross family incomes under $50,000.
Proposition CC, if adopted by voters in November, would allow the state to retain revenue it is currently required to refund under the Taxpayer Bill of Rights (TABOR) and use the money to support higher education, K-12 education and transportation projects across the state.
Colorado is 48th in the nation for state and local higher education funding, according to 2018 data from the State Higher Education Executive Officers Association.
