Dr. Nick Parker, former professor of Texas Tech University, has been at the forefront of the environmental movement for decades. Over the course of his career, Parker has innovated and brought to light new and more sustainable methods of utilizing energy, making use of available resources, and minimizing negative impact on the environment, and has applied them to agricultural operations, businesses, nonprofits, and everything in between. Through a class hosted by ASU Community Partnerships and SEED Park, International, Parker will be imparting his experience and expertise to students and community members in the San Luis Valley, empowering locals to bring practical improvements to our own region.
This Sustainability 101 course, open to Adams State students as well as the San Luis Valley community will teach participants to tackle environmental challenges from a variety of levels, whether working as an individual, operating a business, or taking leadership of a community. This is not just a simple, lecture-based class. In addition to providing classroom instruction, the class will also take students to local organizations such as the Colorado Gators Reptile Park, so students can see practical examples of how the San Luis Valley is reacting to environmental challenges.
The Sustainability 101 course will be available for both current for-credit, for current ASU students, and non-credit, for Community Members, and will be held from June 1, 2015 to Saturday June 6, 2015 in Adams State’s School of Business room 142. Sessions will run from 6 p.m. until 9 p.m. Monday through Thursday; 4 p.m. until 9 p.m. on Friday, and 9 a.m. until 5 p.m. on Saturday. Students can register through Adams State as they would any other course (Sustainability 101, ID 179, and CRN 11565). Community members who wish to sign up for the class should get in touch with Karl Jolliff directly. Registration fees are covered through the normal registration process for ASU students, and are $200 for the full course or $35 for individual classes for community members.
