Adams State University Departments of Theatre, Music, Art, and the ASU LGBTQ+ Affinity Group invite you to join us for the initiation of The Ghostlight Project at 5:30 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 19 in the Xperimental Theatre, located on the north end of the Adams State in the Theatre Building.
On January 19 in each time zone across the country, members of the theatre community from Broadway to regional theatres to high schools and colleges and community theatres will come together to launch The Ghostlight Project.
Inspired by the tradition of leaving a "ghost light" on in a darkened theatre, artists and communities will make or renew a pledge to stand for and protect the values of inclusion, participation, and compassion for everyone regardless of race, class, religion, country of origin, immigration status, (dis)ability, gender identity, or sexual orientation.
The coordinators of the national endeavor state, "January 19th is a moment of gathering within a larger resistance to intolerance at all levels. We aim to create brave spaces that will serve as lights in the coming years. We aim to activate a network of people across the country working to support vulnerable communities. This is not a substitution for protests or direct action, but rather a pledge for continued vigilance and increased advocacy."
The Ghostlight Project defines "a brave space" as a space where:
- It is safe to be who you are, regardless of race, class, religion, country of origin, immigration
status, (dis)ability, gender identity, or sexual orientation. - Diverse opinions, dissent, and argument are not only tolerated, but invited.
- Active listening and courageous exchange are fundamental values.
- Collective action, activism, and community engagement, both within and outside the walls of
the theater, are cultivated, encouraged, and supported.
"Theatre, Music, Art and the LGBTQ+ Affinity group have chosen to participate in this national project because it expresses the beliefs and values that define the work we do on our campus. It is not just the work of a particular moment, but part of ongoing effort to create a more just and inclusive society," said Dr. John Taylor, professor of theatre.
The event will last approximately 30 minutes and will include performances by the Music and Theatre Departments.
The Ghostlight Project is free and open to the public. Lobby doors will open at 5 p.m. and the event will begin at 5:30 p.m
