The SLV Community Band, under the direction of Dr. Kerry Hart, and the Adams State University Wind Ensemble, directed by Dr. Angela Winter, will perform in concert at 7 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 18, in the Richardson Hall Auditorium. The event is free and open to the public.
The concert will feature both bands individually on selected numbers, and will also feature the combined bands on three traditional band compositions.
The program includes the world premiere of Flatirons Fanfare by Franklin Stroble and performed by the ASU Wind Ensemble with the composer present. Stroble was a participant of the Adams State Rare AIR (Artist in Residence) program. The Wind Ensemble will also perform Exultation Fanfare by Salvador Alan Jacobo, The Rusted Heart by Troy Armstrong, and Rocketship by Kevin Day.
The SLV Community Band will perform more traditional selections including Procession of the Nobles by Rimsky-Korsakov; selections from the musical, Man of La Mancha, and Waltz No. 2 from Jazz Suite by Dimitri Shostakovich. “The balance of the old and the new provides an attractive balance for an enjoyable concert,” Hart said. “The three combined pieces performed by both bands are classic pieces that will bring it all together.”
The three concluding numbers are: The Florentiner by Julius Fucik; Folk Dances by Dimitri Shostakovich; and the First Suite in Eb by Gustav Holst. “There is enormous musical talent in the San Luis Valley,” Hart added. “By collaborating it represents the potential for greater musical and artistic endeavors for our communities throughout the valley.”
