Moffat Schools preschool teacher Lisa Lucero

Tears rolled down Lisa Lucero’s eyes when Adams State’s Acacia Nadeau-Lara presented her with the Educator Highlight Award this week in recognition of her work with pre-school children at Moffat Schools.

She’s just never been recognized before and the emotions were too strong to hold back.

Moffat Schools principal Kathy Garcia was there to provide a hug and share the joy Lucero felt. “She’s an amazing preschool teacher. Her classroom is amazing, creative, always clean and fun. It’s my escape to go to a happy place, go get hugs and have fun and laughter with the little kiddos.”

Lucero works with seven preschool students at Moffat Schools. Her colleagues call her a “perfect role model” and a teacher who “pours her heart into her classroom.”

“Miss Lucero values every single child’s life. Always pushing for a greater education for each individual,” said Amberly Romero.

“When she is not in the classroom I know she often thinks about ways to improve her skill,” said Annalise Romero. “She brings forth a bright and warm light to students. I truly believe she has made a difference in the lives of local San Luis valley communities.”

Lisa Lucero and preschool children at Moffat Schools
Lucero has taught preschool for 23 years, the last four at Moffat Schools.

When the award was made by the Adams State School of Education, preschoolers J.J., Sam, and the rest of Lucero’s class sat around their table enjoying the day’s snack and smiling while their teacher tried to hold back the tears.

“It means that I’m worth what I do,” she said of being recognized by Adams State. “I’ve been doing this for 23 years and never gotten an award.”

“Honestly to see the smiles on the kids’ faces, which is why we do it, and to develop into dancers and what they do and getting on stage and the courage to get on stage means a lot to me. I am beyond speechless.”

The Adams State School of Education presents its Educator Highlight Award on a monthly basis. Lucero is the 22nd honoree and the first to earn it for the instruction of preschoolers.

“Ms. Lisa has been dedicated to early childhood for a number of years. Having conversations with her reveals her passion for providing knowledge to the next generations,” said her colleague, Amberly Romero.
