Adams State University Counselor Education graduate students Annelise Allen and Madi Mathys are raising awareness about stigmas and myths surrounding survivors of sexual assault.
They recently created an exhibit reflecting the clothing worn by survivors. The exhibit can be seen at the ASU Student Union Building. “The display is our way to advocate for students and survivors of sexual assault, who often are questioned about what they wore, or did they fight back,” Allen said.
Sexual assault just doesn’t happen in larger communities, it can happen to your neighbors, friends, or family. “We engaged the community to share their stories,” Allen said. Some of the outfits include a brief story of the anonymous survivor’s account.
The clothing on exhibit matches the description of what survivors were wearing when they were attacked, because often sexual assault survivors are asked what they were wearing and how they were acting. The display shows outfits of all different styles and encourages the viewer to empathize with survivors rather than judge them.
“Society needs to stop putting victims on the defense,” Allen said. Information, including the importance of mutual consent for any kind of physical contact, is available at the exhibit. The information is easily accessible but also can be avoided for those who may still suffer the traumatic effects of being assaulted.
Mathys and Allen, who will graduate with their master’s on May 11, formed a close bond with each other and their cohort while pursuing their degrees in counselor education. Their academic experience pushed them to grow personally and develop professionally. “I now want to put myself out there for my clients and community,” Allen added.
Mathys and Allen are members of the counseling honor society Chi Sigma Iota, which focuses on advocacy. “We attempt to touch on issues that are important to college students,” Mathys said.
The SUB is open from 7 a.m. until 10 p.m. Monday through Friday. For more information on how to become involved or to share a story, contact Mathys and Allen by emailing whatwereyouwearingadams@gmail.com.
