Colorado Governor Jared Polis appointed Denver resident Jonathan N. Marquez to the Board of Trustees for Adams State University. He will fill the seat held by Kathy Woods, who resigned from the board this summer. Marquez was appointed to the board for a two-year term expiring December 31, 2021.
A San Luis Valley native and Adams State School of Business alumnus, Marquez, Class of 2013, received his Master of Taxation from the University of Denver Sturm College of Law in 2014.
“I owe a lot of my successes to Adams State and hope I can give back by serving on the Board of Trustees,” Marquez said. “The continued success of Adams State is very close to my heart. I believe I will bring a valuable perspective to the Board as someone who is not too far removed being a student at Adams State, attending graduate school at a larger university, and entering the job market as a new graduate. I can also personally relate to students’ concerns about the rising costs of a college degree and the fear of having years of student loan debt.”
After four years in public accounting, Marquez recently entered the industry as a senior tax analyst for VMware, a large Silicon Valley-based cloud computing and platform virtualization software company.
While attending Adams State, Marquez was a volunteer firefighter for the City of Alamosa and Alamosa County. He served as president of the Future Business Leaders of America Phi Beta Lambda Adams State Chapter and represented the School of Business as a senator with the Associated Students and Faculty (student government). Marquez also was active in the free taxation service provided by Adams State accounting students and faculty supported through the Piton Foundation.
Marquez received the Future Business Leaders of America PBL National Award of Excellence in 2013; and the FBLA PBL Colorado State Honor Award in 2012 and 2013. He was also recognized with the IRS Outstanding Public Service Award in 2012.
“We are pleased to have Mr. Marquez join the Adams State University Board of Trustees,” said ASU Trustees Board Chair Michele Lueck. “As a governing board we are keenly focused on strategically guiding the University. Jonathan will bring sound fiscal perspectives and fresh ideas to our discussions and decisions.”
