The Adams State University Common Reading Experience Committee has arranged a Skype interview with Missouri State Senator Maria Chappelle-Nadal at 7 p.m. Monday, March 2, in McDaniel Hall room 101. The event is free and open to the public. Note – the time has been changed from 6 p.m. to 7 p.m.
A democrat, Chappelle-Nadal represents District 14, which includes Ferguson, Missouri. Since the fatal shooting of Michael Brown in Ferguson on August 9, 2014, Chappelle-Nadal has led her constituents in peaceful demonstrations and has been outspoken against institutional racism in the St. Louis police force and broader Missouri state government. Much of her energy has been devoted to mobilizing the young citizen of Ferguson, calling them to action for positive change. The Senator has proposed legislation to examine policies related to deadly police force following multiple officer-involved deaths of African-American citizens.
Co-sponsors of the event include the Adams State Student Life & Leadership Multicultural Center, Black Student Union, CIELO, English, Theatre, and Communications Department, and the History, Anthropology, Philosophy, Political Science, and Spanish Department.
The event is in conjunction with the Adams State 2014-2015 common reading selection, The Other Wes Moore: One Name, Two Fates.
About the Common Reading Experience
Each year, the University and the broader San Luis Valley community read a common book early in the fall semester and then participate in a broad range of discussions, lectures, essays, contests, and artistic endeavors. The Common Reading Experience Program engages the entire campus and community in a shared intellectual experience through year-long programming.
