The Adams State University Piedra Pump Climbing Competition is Saturday, February 28, in Rex Activity Center. This will be the first competition on the new wall built by Eldorado Climbing Walls in the summer of 2014.
"We are excited to host our first USA Climbing Collegiate Climbing Series (CCS) which will bring in collegiate climbers from around the state," said Curtis Howell assistant director of Adventure Programs and Leadership.
The competition is open to the public including children age 5 and up. Register now at the Adventure Program Office or day of the event. Registration fee is $30 and includes lunch. There will be two climbing sessions the first beginning at 9 a.m. and the second at 2 p.m. Climbers must check-in an hour prior to their session.
"We are anticipating an excellent turnout of 50-60 competitors from around the region," Howell said.
During the break between the morning and afternoon sessions, Dr. Jeff Elison, Adams State associate professor of psychology, will discuss his book, Vertical Mind. "This fascinating book provides keen insight into why people love to climb, the fear of falling, and strategies for improving our mindsets for optimal climbing," Howell added.
The San Luis Valley Brewing Company will host an after party at 5:30 p.m. "We will celebrate the day, give out prizes, and honor our winners," Howell said.
The climbing competition is co-sponsored by Kristi Mountain.
