The Adams State University Theatre Program and the Office of Title V Grant Initiatives invite you to the second annual ASU Ghostlight Project at 7 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 8 in the Xperimental Theatre located in the Adams State University Theatre Building. There will be a reception at 6:30 p.m. in the theatre’s lobby.

It is a tradition in the theatre to leave a “ghost light” on in a darkened theatre so all who enter are safe. Inspired by this practice, ASU representatives will make or renew a pledge to stand for and protect the values of inclusion, participation, and compassion as they commit to making every building across campus a safe zone or brave space for all who enter.

The Ghostlight Project defines “a brave space” as a space where:

  •  It is safe to be who you are, regardless of race, class, religion, country of origin, immigration status, (dis)ability, gender identity, or sexual orientation.
  •  Diverse opinions, dissent, and civil argument are not only tolerated, but invited.
  • Active listening and courageous exchange are fundamental values.
  • Collective action, activism, and community engagement, both within and outside the walls of our buildings, are cultivated, encouraged, and supported.

The ASU Ghostlight Project is part of an ongoing national endeavor that began on January 17, 2017. On that night, Adams State faculty, staff, students and community members joined in solidarity with fellow artists, activists, and concerned citizens around the country to launch the national Ghostlight Project. From Broadway to regional theatres to high schools and colleges and community theatres, there were over 700 organizations in all 50 states plus the District of Columbia who participated.

“The Office of Title V, Theatre, Music, Art, English, Communication, Psychology, Nielsen Library, and other areas have chosen to participate in this project because it expresses the beliefs and values that define the work we do on our campus. It is not just the work of a particular moment, but part of our ongoing mission as a university,” said Dr. John Taylor, professor of theatre.

As part of this project, the Office of Title V Grant Initiatives has purchased free-standing “ghost lights” that will be placed in building across campus and will be turned on every evening as a symbol of Adams State’s commitment to inclusion and diversity.

Taylor said: “Last year’s event was an entertaining and powerful evening highlighted by people coming to together to commit to creating a more just and inclusive society. On September 8, join us and add your light to ours. Together, our lights will be a powerful symbol of our belief that through our actions change is possible.”

The Ghostlight Project is a free event and presented in conjunction with HSI Week. The evening begins at 6:30 p.m. with a reception in the theatre’s lobby and the event will begin at 7 p.m. It will include performances by the Music, Theatre, and English programs.
