Laughter is the perfect gift this holiday season as Adams State University Theatre presents You Can’t Take It With You. Tickets go on sale at 8 a.m. Friday, Nov. 18 at the ASU Theatre Box Office.
You Can’t Take It With You, directed by Dr. John H. Taylor, is the 13th holiday season production that the theatre program has produced since 2004. The comedy’s family-friendly themes, its madcap plotline, and its delightful characters more than make it a perfect choice for the program’s winter production. Taylor notes, "It’s a screwball comedy about families for families. It is perfect for this time of year as we celebrate the season by being with our families. And the play’s message of living life fully is appropriate for any time of the year."
The story is a familiar one. A woman meets and falls in love with a man. They decide to get married. When it’s time for their families to meet, it all threatens to unravel because of bad timing and a culture clash between their relatives. With comic hijinks, misunderstandings, and some of the most lovable characters ever to grace the stage, the pursuit of happiness has never been so much fun!
Few modern plays can match the critical and popular success of You Can’t Take It With You. It is a classic American comedy, a Pulitzer Prize winning play, and an Academy Award winning film. "Its enormous critical and popular success is no small feat for a comedy especially one about an eccentric family and the eclectic collection of quirky characters who take up residence in Grandpa Vanderhof’s home. If you think your family is ‘strange,’ you need to meet the Sycamores!" said Taylor.
Public performances of You Can’t Take It With You run at 7:30 p.m. Dec. 2, 9, and 10 and at 2 p.m. Dec. 10 and 11 on the Main Stage. The Share the Magic benefit performance for La Puente Home is Dec. 3 and the ASU Alumni performance is Dec. 4. The production is sponsored in part through the generosity of Dale and Bev Hettinger, Dan and Debbie Bowers, and Mike and Dianna Goodart.
Tickets are $10 for general public, $9 for seniors and students, $7 for children 12 and under, and free to Associated Students and Faculty with current ASU I.D. The box office number is 587-TIXX (8499). On Nov. 18, first priority will be given to people standing in line for tickets with telephone orders filled afterwards. After the 18th, the box will be open from 2:30 p.m. until 5 p.m. Monday through Friday.
