Meet the Chief
Hello, I would like to introduce myself. My name is Samuel R. Maestas. I am a 12th-generation Spanish descent, and I deeply connect to diversity. My family lineage can be traced back to the Spanish Colonists who settled in northern New Mexico and southern Colorado in the late 1500s. I am the Chief of Police for Adams State University. Before joining the Adams State University Police Department, I had 28 years of law enforcement experience. I started my career in 1996 as a patrol officer for La Jara, Colorado, a small town in southern Colorado. In 1999, I left the La Jara Police Department and gained employment with the City of Alamosa’s Police Department. During this tenure, I held several positions and commanded units. From 2018 to 2024, I served as the Support Services Commander and oversaw the Major Crimes & Narcotics Division, Internal Affairs Division, Property & Evidence, and Community Policing and Ordinance Enforcement Unit. From 2014 to 2018, I served as the Operations Division Commander and supervised the Patrol Division, K9 Units, SRO, FTO, and SWAT programs. I implemented policy and procedure, worked with the police department’s budget process, administrative duties, mentor and leadership development, schedule management, training and self-development, risk management, community policing, crime prevention, crime scene preservation, criminal activity investigation, arrest violators and suspects, traffic enforcement, and safety. I am an undergraduate of Columbia Southern University with a bachelor’s degree in criminal justice. I have completed the FBI LEEDA(Law Enforcement Executive Development Association) Leadership Trilology Institute and am a member of the Colorado Association of Chiefs of Police. As the chief, I have prioritized safety, ensuring the students, faculty, staff, and visitors feel safe. I will also remain focused on supporting officers’ mental and physical health. I will continue building bonds within our communities and proactively engaging in community policing. I will remain steadfast in keeping Adams State University one of the safest University campuses in the United States.
